What the tracker tells us

TrendScale

10+ GW of BESS is now in active procurement

The aggregate capacity in this tracker exceeds 10 GW. That makes 2026 the first year in which BESS procurement in the GCC rivals solar IPP procurement in scale.

  • UAE leads with 2.7 GW of defined tenders.
  • Saudi Arabia's pipeline is largest but least defined in timing.
  • Qatar and Oman are following with smaller, state-directed programmes.
ModelShift

IPP is replacing EPC for standalone storage

The Al Ajban and Hassyan tenders use the IPP model, not EPC. This shifts risk to the developer/operator and creates long-term revenue visibility through capacity payments and ancillary service contracts.

  • IPP model requires equity commitment and long-term O&M capability.
  • EPC model remains in Qatar and parts of NEOM where state ownership is preferred.
  • Mixed models (Masdar) allow developers to choose their risk exposure.
DurationTechnology

4-hour duration is becoming standard; longer durations emerging

Most tenders specify 4-hour duration (4:1 energy-to-power ratio). This aligns with daily peak-shaving economics. Longer durations (6–8 hours) are under evaluation for seasonal shifting and hydrogen integration.

  • Lithium-ion dominates all current tenders.
  • Flow batteries are in pilot for 6+ hour roles.
  • Thermal storage is being evaluated for CSP hybrid plants.
